Technical SEO makes sure search engines can find, read and trust your pages. On most small business sites, twelve checks fix the problems that hold rankings back. Work through them before investing in new content, because new pages inherit every technical problem the site already has.

Crawling and indexing

  • Verify the site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools
  • Submit an XML sitemap that lists only pages you want indexed
  • Check robots.txt doesn’t block important pages or files
  • Fix pages Search Console reports as excluded by mistake

Page structure

  • Give every page a unique title tag under 60 characters
  • Write a meta description under 155 characters that says what the page offers
  • Use one H1 per page, then headings in a logical order
  • Set a canonical URL on every page to avoid duplicates

Speed and experience

  • Pass Core Web Vitals on mobile: LCP, INP and CLS
  • Serve every page over HTTPS, with no mixed content

Understanding

  • Add structured data: Organization on the home page, Service, FAQ and Breadcrumb where they apply
  • Link related pages to each other with descriptive anchor text, so no page is an orphan
Studio tipCheck your site with JavaScript turned off. If the main text disappears, search engines and AI assistants may not see it either. Server-rendered pages avoid the problem.

Then measure

Set up Google Analytics 4 with the conversions that matter, such as form sends and calls, and link it to Search Console. After a month you will see which searches bring visitors and which pages turn them into enquiries, which tells you where new content will pay off.
